The Student Government of MRCS

What is SGA?

SGA stands for Student Government Association. This association is given as an opportunity for students to present their own ideas and obtain leadership skills by unifying their fellow high schoolers. This group will organize activities and acts of service through a formal set of procedures.  The information will then be communicated to the student body. The SGA meets at least 30 minutes prior to the high school meetings to discuss the activities, and/or any needed changes.

Roles within the SGA (The Council):

The President: This position must be filled by a senior in high school. The President will preside over all meetings for the SGA and create an agenda for the high school meetings. He, or she, will also open each of the high school meetings.  The President is the only SGA member who cannot vote, except in the case of a tie. This position is voted on by the high school student body.

The Vice President: This position must be filled by a junior, or senior, in high school. The Vice President will fulfill all the President’s duties, if he, or she, cannot attend one of the SGA, or high school, meetings. The VP will also assist the President, as needed. This position is voted on by the high school student body.

The Treasurer: This position must be filled by a freshman, or sophomore, in high school. The Treasurer will collect money for high school events and keep track of attendance. This position is voted on by the high school student body.

The Vice Treasurer: This position will be filled by one of the Senate members. However, it cannot be filled by a chairman. The Vice Treasurer will assume all the Treasurer’s duties, when he, or she, cannot fulfill them. The VT will also assist the Treasurer, as needed. This position is voted on by the SGA Council members.

The Secretary: This position must be filled by a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school. The Secretary will maintain the meeting minutes, keeping them on file. He, or she, will take attendance at every meeting.  The Secretary will serve as a communication link between the SGA and the MRCS Administrator, as well as the SGA and the adult maintaining the MRCS Facebook account. He, or she, will also keep a database of the phone numbers, names, and email addresses of MRCS high school students. (This information will be gathered at the first high school meeting.) This position is voted on by the high school student body.

The Vice Secretary: This position will be filled by one of the Senate members. However, it cannot be filled by a chairman. The Vice Secretary will assume the Secretary’s duties when he, or she, cannot fulfill them. The VS will also assist the Secretary, as needed. This position is voted on by the SGA Council members.

Roles within the SGA (The Senate):

Grade Representatives: There are two (2) representatives for each grade in high school. They are the link between the SGA and other high school students. Each pair of Representatives will be responsible for sending emails, calls, or texts to the students in their grade. These communications should contain information including, but not limited to: upcoming high school events, upcoming field trips, other MRCS events, and/or pertinent information. Each position is voted on by the its correlating grade.

Activities Chairman: This position is filled by a high school student, without regard to the grade enrolled.  The Activities Chairman will be responsible for keeping a calendar of all activities and maintaining contact with the High School Activities Coordinator. This position is voted on by the high school student body.

Community Service Chairman: This position is filled by a high school student, without regard to the grade enrolled. The Community Service Chairman will be responsible for keeping a calendar of all activities and coordinating volunteer opportunities. He, or she, will also provide volunteer forms, which are filled out and signed by the participants. This position is voted on by the high school student body.

Expectations of SGA Members:

SGA members should attempt to make all high school meetings. They cannot miss two consecutive SGA meetings. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times, whether at a volunteer project, or a high school meet.

Representatives are the connection between the SGA and their grade.  They must be capable of contacting the high school members of MRCS. Representatives should be receptive to receiving contact and questions; reporting to the SGA any ideas, questions, or concerns from the members of the high school. SGA members are expected to complete their work for SGA, regardless of their schedule, even if it must be done at home. Members whom do not fulfill a position’s duties will be removed from the SGA.

Running for Office:

Students interested in running for SGA can sign up at the MRCS Kick-off Meeting, on August 10th, or email Cary Hughen prior to the event. The SGA election will be held at the High School Kick-off Meeting, on August 17th.
